As reported in Farmtario, there are a number of uncertainties faced by Canadian organic grain farmers. Surprising to me is the fact that organic food grade corn production is rare in Ontario. The surprising part is that hasn’t been a problem for organic corn growers because ” virtually all organic corn grown here is destined for livestock feed. Over one third of the annual production is exported to mills serving mostly broiler and egg-laying farms in the United States.”
I wonder whether the greater emphasis on protectionism looming South of the border, especially if the Republicans succeed in taking the Oval Office and Senate, presents a greater risk for organic corn as part of the regular rotation here. The article indicates that continued optimism remains among organic growers despite this and other uncertainties.
